Closure of Wrexham Proof of Age Scheme

25 August 2010

The Wrexham Proof of Age Scheme will not issue any further 18+ Proof of Age Cards after Monday 6th September 2010. The scheme which was set up as a partnership between Wrexham Council, Yale College and North Wales Police in 1999, and accredited by The National Proof of Age Standards Scheme (PASS) has seen a big reduction in the number of 18+ cards issued to young people, following the growth of nationally available proof of age cards such as Citizen Card, Proof GB and Validate (also PASS accredited).

Andy Lewis, Chief Housing and Public Protection Officer said “The Wrexham Proof of Age Scheme has served a useful purpose in helping retailers and Trading Standards Officers and North Wales Police raise awareness of and reduce the number of sales of alcohol, cigarettes and other age restricted products to underage purchasers. It played a vital role when there were limited ways for eligible young people to prove their age, but is no longer necessary because strong alternative schemes are now available”.

Retailers and Licensees can continue to accept cards which have been issued by the Wrexham Scheme, all of which have been subject to stringent checking procedures.

Young people who would like to contain a Proof of Age Card are advised to contact PASS or one of the national card schemes via their websites www.pass-scheme.org.uk, www.citizencard.com, www.proofgb.com or www.validateuk.co.uk
